We've finally secured a rather special booking aboard The Snark, the pea-green sailing ship moored in Exeter Canal Basin, along from Rockfish and Piazza Terracina. She is an intimate and wonderfully unusual room: two long benches seating just ten people each, so there are only 20 places for the entire evening. Dinner is a fixed three courses, served on large sharing platters set down the middle of the table for you to help yourself. This isn't tiny tapas-style dining — The Snark's platters are generous, sociable and genuinely satisfying. The exact menu is still to be agreed (it might, for example, run to duck pie or homity pie, with starters and pudding either side) and we'll share it the moment it's confirmed. We're not calling this a Christmas dinner, even though it falls on 10 December. That gives the chefs far more freedom with the menu — and let's face it, you'll be eating plenty of Christmas dinners elsewhere. Arrive promptly at 6.30pm. Dinner is served at 7pm and the evening finishes at around 9.30pm. Your 60 credits cover all three courses and your seat. Drinks aren't included and can be bought aboard the boat. Please check your diary carefully and only book if you're confident you can come. Because everything on this one is paid for up front, seats are non-refundable and cannot be transferred to another Dinners With Friends event. The evening goes ahead with a minimum of 14 guests — if we have to cancel because numbers aren't reached, you'll of course be refunded in full. Anyone with allergies or particular dietary requirements should check directly with the venue before booking ([email protected]). The galley is small, so vegan and highly restrictive diets can't be accommodated. Twenty places, one table, one boat. I expect this one to fill rather quickly.

The Snark is a traditional seagoing sailing ship — the big pea-green vessel moored on the Exeter Canal at Piazza Terracina, a minute from Rockfish. She takes sailing holidays through the summer and opens as a dining room over the winter, cooking home-cooked food from fresh local ingredients for up to 24 guests seated at two long shared tables. She is owned and run by two experienced chefs who have cooked for charter parties and fine-dining occasions, and is named after Lewis Carroll's The Hunting of the Snark. Pre-paid group bookings only — there are no walk-ins.
