In short

The main singles events in Exeter in autumn 2026 are Original Dating's fortnightly Thursday speed dating at The Bootlegger on Fore Street (ages 30–45 and 40–55) and Zest Singles, which runs speed dating, suppers and walks for over-50s. For lower-pressure ways to meet people, try the Devon Bootlegs Sunday walks, ESCA (20s–40s), Socials in Exeter's monthly pub night, or Saturday parkrun on the Quay.

Where can you meet people in Exeter if you are single?

You have two routes. The first is events built for single people, where everyone knows why they are there. The second is groups built around doing something, like walking, running, reading or eating, where you meet people without the pressure. In a city this size, the second route tends to work better, and the first is quicker if you know what you want.

Exeter is small. The person you avoided eye contact with at speed dating will turn up at your mate's birthday. That makes any explicit singles event feel slightly higher-stakes than it would in Bristol or London, and it is one reason the activity groups below work so well here. You see the same faces every week, and connections build slowly without anyone feeling put on the spot.

We checked every organiser and venue in this guide in September 2026, using their own websites and event listings and the Food Standards Agency register for venues. Anything we could not confirm as still running has been taken out. (If you are new to the city, start here. If you are looking specifically for LGBTQ+ spaces, our LGBTQ+ social life guide covers those in detail.)

Are there speed dating events in Exeter?

Yes. The regular one is Original Dating, which runs speed dating at The Bootlegger on Fore Street. When we checked in September 2026, it had listings every other Thursday from October to early December. The age brackets alternate between 30–45 and 40–55, and each event advertises the chance to meet up to 30 singles. The Bootlegger is still trading at 162–163 Fore Street. Its dim speakeasy look gives the evening a proper bar setting, so you are not sitting in a function room.

The format is the usual one. You get a scorecard, sit down, chat for a few minutes, then move on. Afterwards you tick who you liked on the website, and if the feeling is mutual you both get each other's details. Check the age bracket on each date before you book, because the dates alternate and it is easy to book the wrong one.

Our verdict: speed dating is the most honest format in this guide, because nobody has to guess why anyone else is there. The trade-off is that a few minutes tells you about chemistry, not character. It suits confident people who want a quick answer. If you have never tried it, go once. Either result tells you something useful.

Speed dating in Exeter is ticketed in advance, and places are held per gender, so one side often sells out first. Book as soon as you see a date that suits your age bracket, and do not count on getting in on the door.

What singles events are there in Exeter for over-50s?

The standout is Zest Singles. Sarah Briggs runs it for singles over 50 across Exeter and Devon, and she hosts almost every event herself. There are two strands. One is speed dating for ages 50–65. The other is a relaxed social calendar of suppers, brunches and walks, where meeting someone is possible but not the stated point.

Her September 2026 listings show the range: speed dating at Browns on Haven Road by the Quay, a supper at The Botanist, and a Sunday walk from Darts Farm to The Lighter Inn in Topsham. You can join as a monthly member or pay per event. Current prices are on her site.

Our verdict: for over-50s, Zest is the best-organised option in the city, and having both formats is its strength. If speed dating feels like too much, start with a supper, which means a smaller table and a slower pace. Our guide to over-50s social life in Exeter covers the wider picture.

What about singles nights that are not speed dating?

National "everyone here is single" brands have listed Exeter nights in the past. We could not confirm any currently scheduled Exeter dates when we checked, so we are not recommending one here. The same goes for one-off Valentine's and summer singles nights at bars. They come and go, and our what's on in Exeter guide is the better place to track them. If you want something that runs every week, the groups below are more reliable.

Where do people actually meet in Exeter without it being a singles event?

This is the section to read if speed dating makes you want to hide under the table. Doing something side by side takes the weight off the conversation, and seeing the same people week after week is how acquaintances turn into something more. Our piece on turning acquaintances into real connections explains why it works.

Devon Bootlegs: Sunday walks with a pub meal

Devon Bootlegs is a walking group for people in their 20s to 50s. It aims to walk every Sunday of the year, mostly in Devon, and it often books a pub meal afterwards so there is time to socialise. The pub is where most of the talking happens. You can try up to three walks before you are asked to join the Ramblers and pick Devon Bootlegs as your group. Walks are typically 10 miles or more, so they suit people who already walk.

Our verdict: this is the best mixed-age option in this guide if you are between 30 and 50. The walk gives you a reason to be there, and the pub gives you time to talk. Our walking routes for socialising guide covers where these groups tend to go.

ESCA: adventures for 20s to 40s

ESCA (Exeter and South Coast Adventures) is a very active Meetup group for people in their 20s to 40s. Its September 2026 calendar included an Exe Estuary walk, a board games evening, a Torquay coastal walk with a cavern visit and ultimate frisbee, with dozens more events listed after that.

Our verdict: if you are under 40 and want to fill a calendar quickly, join this. There are so many events that you will see the same people again within a fortnight, and that is what matters.

Socials in Exeter: a monthly pub night for anyone new

Socials in Exeter exists to tackle adult loneliness, and it says so plainly. The core event is a monthly social in a city-centre pub, with a WhatsApp group for things people arrange on the spur of the moment. It is free, and the organisers describe it as a safe space for everyone.

Our verdict: this is the easiest first step on this list. Everyone there came to meet new people, which is exactly what makes it less awkward.

Exeter Socials: the big all-rounder

Exeter Socials is a large, long-running Meetup group with dozens of volunteer organisers and thousands of past events. They run a full calendar of dining out, arts and culture, games, fitness and wellbeing sessions. Its September 2026 listings ranged from a book publishing workshop to weekly dance classes.

Our verdict: the calendar is broad but less focused. Pick one or two recurring events you actually like and keep going back, rather than trying a different thing each week. For more groups, see our guide to social clubs in Exeter.

Go to any group at least three times before you decide whether it suits you. The first visit is always slightly awkward, the second is easier, and by the third you will recognise people and have something to pick up on. One visit does not tell you much.

Is parkrun a good way to meet people in Exeter?

Yes, if you keep going back. Exeter Riverside parkrun is a free, timed 5K every Saturday morning by the river. It is busy: the 12 September 2026 run had more than 500 finishers and dozens of volunteers. Plenty of people walk it. The social part is the coffee afterwards, and it counts double if you volunteer, because marshalling puts you next to the same people every week.

For something smaller with a pint at the end, Topsham Brewery hosts the Top Brew Run Club every Tuesday at 6pm. It is a social run open to all abilities, and it finishes at the bar. Our running clubs and parkrun guide has the full list.

Our verdict: a weekly run is one of the best ways in Exeter to meet people without trying. The Tuesday brewery run is the better choice if you want conversation rather than a personal best.

Can you meet people at a book club in Exeter?

Yes, and it works better than it sounds. Exeter City of Literature runs an official branch of Silent Book Club at Topsham Brewery on the first Wednesday and third Monday of each month, from 6pm to 8pm, and it is free. You bring whatever you are reading, read quietly for a while, and then talk. Nobody has to have finished a set book. Exeter City of Literature runs a third monthly session too, so check exetercityofliterature.com for the full schedule.

Our verdict: this is the gentlest option in the guide and good for introverts. What someone is reading and why says more about them than any dating profile. Our book clubs and literary events guide has more.

Which Exeter pubs are good for meeting people?

A pub is better for your second meeting with someone than your first, because walking in alone and hoping is a skill most people do not have. That said, two city pubs are known for the kind of shared-table, chatty atmosphere where talking to strangers feels normal, and both are still trading.

The Old Firehouse on New North Road is a busy, loud cider-and-pizza pub. Tables fill up, and people end up sharing space. The Fat Pig on John Street is a small independent pub where talking across tables is normal. For more, see our pubs guide and cocktail bars guide.

What about volunteering and classes?

Volunteering is the most underrated way to meet good people. You are focused on the task, the conversation happens alongside it, and the people who give up a Saturday for conservation work tend to be worth knowing. Our volunteering guide lists current opportunities in the city.

Courses that run for several weeks, such as pottery, art and cooking, work for the same reason as parkrun: you see the same faces again. Being a beginner together is surprisingly bonding. See our guides to pottery and craft workshops, art classes and cooking classes and supper clubs.

Is Dinners With Friends a singles event?

No, and that is deliberate. Dinners With Friends is social dining. Small groups who do not know each other sit down together at Exeter restaurants, a host makes the introductions, and you have a proper conversation over a meal. You pay for your own food and drink at the restaurant.

We mix singles, couples and friends at the same table on purpose. When everyone in the room is single, the pressure goes up. When it is a mix, you are simply at a dinner party. If you click with someone, brilliant. If you come away with three new friends instead, that is brilliant too. Over a couple of hours at a table you see things a profile never shows you: whether someone listens, what makes them laugh, and how they treat the staff. There is a reason sharing food has brought people together for thousands of years. We have written more about why a dinner can beat a singles night.

Most people are nervous about sitting down with a table of strangers. A host makes the introductions, so you are never left to break the ice alone. Our guide to making friends at events when you don't know anyone has practical advice for your first time.

A few honest tips for meeting people in Exeter

Go alone. It sounds wrong, but it makes you more approachable. With friends, you stick to your own group. On your own, you talk to whoever is there, and so does everyone else who came solo. Our guide to doing things alone in Exeter helps if that feels daunting.

Stop treating everything as a date. If you build a social life you enjoy, romance often follows from it. The feeling that you need to find someone makes every conversation heavier than it has to be.

Accept that Exeter is small. You will bump into your date in the queue at the Quay, and the person in your pottery class will turn out to be your colleague's ex. Be kind and do not burn bridges. It is part of living somewhere with a real community. Our realistic guide to dating in Exeter goes further into this.
