New Year in Exeter: How to Start 2027 With Connection, Not Just Resolutions

What is happening on New Year's Eve in Exeter in 2026?

The short answer is that nothing is confirmed yet. When we checked in September 2026, we could not find a New Year's Eve 2026 event from any Exeter venue or organiser. Exeter Phoenix's published programme ran to December and had no NYE listing. Venues usually announce their New Year plans from late October onwards, so this guide lists confirmed events only. We will add them as they are announced, and we have not repeated last year's line-ups as if they were this year's.

Until the listings arrive, the safest way to plan New Year's Eve in Exeter is to book dinner or a pub table with the people you actually want to see. City-centre venues fill up fast on the 31st.

Where can you see in the New Year in Exeter city centre?

Two of the city's most characterful historic pubs are still trading, and both have current Food Standards Agency hygiene records at their addresses:

• The Turks Head, 202 High Street. Our pick if you want to be in the middle of things: it sits on High Street next to the Guildhall, so you are on the city's main pedestrian spine when midnight comes, not tucked away down a side road.
• The Ship Inn, 1–3 Martins Lane. Our pick for a group heading to the Cathedral Green: the lane runs between High Street and Cathedral Yard, so you can leave a few minutes before midnight and be on the Green in moments.

Getting home after midnight

Plan the journey home before you go out, not at 12.30am. Bus and train timetables change over Christmas and New Year, so check the operators' own New Year timetables (Stagecoach South West for local buses, GWR and National Rail for trains from Exeter St Davids and Exeter Central) in the week before. Taxis are in heavy demand across the country after midnight on the 31st, so book a local firm in advance if you can, or agree as a group who is driving and staying alcohol-free.

Our honest advice is that the pressure to have a legendary night is the enemy of a good one. A small dinner with friends, a walk through the Cathedral Green before midnight and a toast with people you like is enough. The aim is to wake up on 1 January feeling connected, not depleted. Why do most New Year's resolutions fail by February?

Every January the same ritual starts: gym memberships, Dry January pledges, reading lists, early nights. By February the gym bag has stayed in the car for weeks.

Most resolutions are solo projects. Nobody notices when you stop and nobody asks where you have been. All the accountability comes from you, and that is about as reliable as Devon weather in March.

The resolution almost nobody makes is the one that would help most: to spend more time with other people. We don't mean a vague intention. We mean a concrete, weekly commitment in the calendar. Call it the social resolution. Exeter is a very easy city to start it in.

What are the best free social things to do in Exeter in January 2027?

The ones worth your time are regular. You get to know people when you see the same faces again and again, not at one-off events.

Exeter Riverside parkrun

Exeter Riverside parkrun is a free, timed 5k every Saturday morning. It runs along the river in the Riverside Valley Park; check the event page for the current course. Runners, joggers and walkers are all welcome. You register once online, bring your barcode (printed or on your phone) and turn up. parkrun also traditionally runs extra events on New Year's Day, so check the event page in late December for 1 January 2027.

It works as a social resolution because it happens at the same time and in the same place every week. You don't have to organise anything. Silent Book Club Exeter

Exeter City of Literature has hosted the Exeter branch of Silent Book Club since April 2024. It expanded to three sessions a month in 2026, and it is free. Bring whatever you are reading, read in company for an hour, then chat afterwards if you want to. The pattern the City of Literature gives is: first Wednesday and third Monday of the month at Topsham Brewery, and last Thursday at 12 Bar Music & Social on Paris Street in the city centre. All sessions run 6pm to 8pm and are free. Two of the three are out in Topsham, so if you want the city-centre one, aim for the last Thursday. Exeter Phoenix courses

Exeter Phoenix on Gandy Street runs a rolling programme of courses and workshops. January 2027 dates had not been published when we checked. A class is one of the best ways to make friends as an adult. You do something alongside the same small group every week, which feels far more natural than sitting opposite strangers trying to make conversation.

The Royal Albert Memorial Museum on Queen Street is free to enter. It is a warm, low-cost place to meet a friend on a grey January afternoon, and it is the kind of public space where small, casual contact slowly makes a city feel like home.

How do you do Dry January in Exeter without losing your social life?

Dry January's social problem is that when you stop drinking, you often stop going out. The answer is to replace drinking occasions, not cut them out. Meet in one of the city's coffee shops instead of the pub. Book a dinner rather than a bar crawl. Walk instead of meeting at a house party. Many pubs now stock alcohol-free beer, so it is worth asking whether you can still meet in your usual pub.

What can you do outdoors in Exeter in winter?

• Quay Climbing Centre. It describes itself as the South West's largest indoor climbing centre. It is on Haven Road at the Quay, with a café on site and a separate Clip 'n Climb for beginners. It is weatherproof and naturally sociable.
• Raceworld. An indoor karting centre near Woodbury Salterton, just outside Exeter. Drivers must be 11 or over. It is a good group day out when the weather turns.

How do you make a social resolution stick?

Make it specific. "See more people" is not a plan. "parkrun every Saturday and Silent Book Club once a month" is.

Make it regular. Repetition is how acquaintances become friends.

Make it easy. Choose things that are close to home and free or cheap. On a cold January evening, every obstacle becomes an excuse.

Tell someone. Better still, invite them to come with you.

Accept imperfection. You will miss weeks, and that is fine. What matters is the direction: towards people rather than away from them.
